How we choose products

How The Small Space Fix researches products: specs, warranties and owner complaints, with no invented tests.

In short: we compare listed specifications and dimensions, read warranty terms, and analyze thousands of verified owner reviews, with extra attention to the complaints. We do not run a test lab. When we have used a product ourselves, we say so; when we have not, we say that too.

1. Start with the problem, not the product

Every guide on The Small Space Fix starts with a real problem: a space, a pet, a measurement. We decide what a good solution has to do before we look at products, so a product only makes the list if it solves that problem.

2. Specs and fit

We check the listed dimensions, weight limits, materials and sizing against the measurements in the guide. If a product only fits by a fraction of an inch, we say so.

3. Owner reviews, especially the complaints

For each product we read recent critical reviews (one to three stars) and group them by problem: what breaks, what doesn’t fit, what people regret. We summarize the patterns in our own words in a “what owners complain about” section. We never copy review text, and we don’t show star ratings or review counts, because they change constantly.

4. Warranty and support

We note the warranty the maker or listing states, and when owners report trouble getting a warranty honored, we tell you.

5. Availability

We check that each product is in stock and ships to a U.S. address on the day we publish or update a guide. Prices change, so we don’t print them.

6. Safety comes from experts

Safety advice comes from official and expert sources, such as government safety agencies, extension services and veterinary organizations, and we link to them in each guide’s sources.
